William Carlton Rice was a house painter and self-ordained minister whose single performative
gesamtkunstwerk was the conversion of his land into the sprawling cross garden. The rough-painted crucifixes and jagged signs foretold imminent apocalyptic punishment for all who dared transgress, in language as fast and loose as that of their maker.
