Andy Kaye

Andrzej (Andy) Kaye is a Powys-based sculptor, whose practice explores the tactile relationship between the natural world and the human impulse to shape it. With a background in both art and care, his approach is deeply attentive, balancing material integrity with intuitive form making.

Originally trained at Falmouth School of Art in the early 1980s, Andrzej later pursued a career in learning disability nursing and adult safeguarding. His return to making came through stone carving, which he began in 2021 with the Llangarron stone carving group. He now works primarily with granite and other hard stones, often drawn to surface boulders and quarried remnants that carry the marks of time and environment.

His sculptural language is defined by contrast, between smooth and rough, cut and untouched, geometric and organic. Each piece is formed entirely with hand tools, allowing a meditative, slow-paced dialogue with the stone to unfold. The work resists easy interpretation, instead offering a quiet invitation to contemplate material, rhythm, and form.

Andrzej does not title his sculptures, preferring to let the work speak directly. For him, visual expression holds its own meaning, independent of narrative. His pieces emerge from an internal sense or image, sometimes fragmentary, shaped further by his response to the stone itself.

Andrzej’s work will be exhibited as part of Affordable Art, running from 31st July to 22nd September 2025.
