VideoSculpture XIV (Shudder) is a video installation where a film played on apparently white screen is reflected into a black lacquered piece of glass. The video is 7 minute long, and is made entirely of stock footage. The stockfootage industry produces short clips on any topic, which can be used as a substitute for costly shooting and film production. The imagery is intended for the broadest possible audience and stylized for easy cut and paste into filmsand advertisements. In Shudder these constructed images are employed to reveal a space on the other side of the mirror, a world of dark fantasy.
A soldier wanders through different frames of quickly shifting realities. Trapped in a slow paced loop, the erraticnarration strands him in a harsh dreamscape as various trauma are re-enacted. He stands still, face closed, eyes empty. He runs and falls. A car burns. He sits in a wheelchair as his daughter jumps into his arms. There is a funeral, a blue sky and a bittersweet taste as the psychological impossibilities of war are brought forward.
