“People often look at the surfaces of my work and have trouble knowing what exactly it is,” Benning has recounted: “Is it leather, is it ceramic? Is it a sculpture or a drawing or a painting? ...the indeterminacy of the medium itself is really

important to me.”

Sadie Benning first became known for their fragmented, experimental video in the early 1990s, in which they investigated memory, identity and the anxiousness of queer teenagerhood in the Midwestern United States. Over the following decades

their interests expanded, encompassing political and societal concerns as well as aesthetic and formal aspects of their artistic production.
