Juchitán Vintage 8x10 - Graciela Master SEt

"I was lucky enough to get a call in 1979 from Francisco Toledo who, without knowing me, offered me the Juchitan project. It is a mythical place that had been visited by Cartier-Bresson, Einstein, Tina Modotti, Frida Kahlo, something I did not know when Francisco Toledo called. He wanted me to take a series of pictures that would later be kept in the local Casa de Cultura. I then spent long periods of time living there. I was able to support myself thanks to the lithographs Francisco gave me as presents to sell, because in those days I was completely broke. In the Juchitan I spent a lot of time at the public market, hanging out with the women there, these big, strong politicized, emancipated, wonderful women. I discovered this world of women and I made it my business to spend time with them and they gave me access to their daily world and to their traditions."
