Monilola Olayemi Ilupeju

The new paintings on leather by Nigerian-American artist Monilola Olayemi Ilupeju explore the miraculous and uncanny images that emerge in the pursuit of beauty, excellence, and security. Bringing together makeup tutorials, athletic performance, weddings, and scenes from everyday life, the works consider how these pursuits become intimately inscribed onto the body. Central to the presentation is leather as a painting surface. As a literal skin, leather conveys tactility, vulnerability, and protection, while its interaction with oil paint amplifies the corporeal presence and the tension between the body as surface and the meanings it carries.
